Personal Color Analysis Theory

PERSONAL COLOR ANALYSIS THEORY 101

31be9087-f32c-4e8c-8c54-2195fa0736b7.jpg
Since one of my goals as a makeup artist is to make my clients feel their most confident and beautiful when wearing my art, one technique that originated in the United States and that has been recently popularized in East Asian countries like South Korea that I like to incorporate when doing makeup is the concept of personal color analysis theory, also known as seasonal color analysis, which the idea that certain colors look the best on you based on your hair, eye, and skin color. There are four major seasons that a person would fall into one of: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
According to the elements of art, colors/hues are categorized as being tints, tones, and shades as well as being either warm or cool. Value refers to the dark or lightness of a color. Tints are colors that have a lighter value due to them being mixed with white. Shades are colors that have a darker value due to them being mixed with black. Tones are colors that have a neutral value due to them being mixed with gray. Warm colors are red, orange, and yellow while cool colors are green, blue, and purple. You can also manipulate a color to be warm or cool by changing its undertone by mixing it with another color. For example, mixing purple, a cool-toned color, with some red, a warm-toned color, to create red-violet, a cool-toned color with a warm undertone. Saturation/chroma refers to the purity of a color. The closer a color gets to becoming gray, the less saturated it is by definition. Now, going back to the personal color wheel above, it categorizes each season as falling on one end of the bright-to-soft spectrum, the cool-to-warm spectrum, and the dark-to-light spectrum. Winters are classified as being cool, dark, and bright, meaning these people look best in colors that have a darker value, are cool-toned, and are higher in saturation. Springs are classified as being warm, light, and bright, meaning these people look best in colors that have a lighter value, are warm-toned, and are higher in saturation. Summers are classified as being cool, light, and soft, meaning these people look best in colors that have a lighter value, are cool-toned, and are lower in saturation. Lastly, autumns are classified as being warm, dark, and soft, meaning these people look best in colors that have a darker value, are warm-toned, and are lower in saturation.

Moving on, as you may have also noticed, there are three subcategories for each season. Cool winters, warm springs, cool summers, and warm autumns are considered the purest form of their season. Meanwhile, bright winters/springs, soft summers/autumns, dark autumns/winters, and light springs/summers are considered variations of their cool/warm counterparts that lean into certain characteristics of another season. For example, bright springs are a variation of springs that lean into winter territory because of their colors having a darker value than warm springs. Additionally, light summers are a variation of summers that lean into spring territory because of their colors having a higher saturation than cool summers.
So now that you are aware of all of this information you are probably wondering how to determine what your personal color is. The first thing to figure out is if you are you warm-toned (yellow/golden undertone to your skin; green veins; objectively looks better in gold jewelry), cool-toned, (blue or rosy undertone to your skin; blue or purple veins; objectively looks better in silver jewelry), or neutral (no noticeable undertone to your skin; turquoise veins; objectively look good in both gold and silver jewelry)?

*Note: being tan doesn't always equate to being warm and being fair doesn't always equate to being cool.

If you are cool-toned, you would be classified as a winter or a summer. If you are cool toned you would be classified as a spring or autumn. Lastly, if you are neutral, this means you may not be affected by the temperature of colors and are likely more affected by value or chroma. Next is to figure out what season and subcategory you are based on your features below. The subcategory that is opposite of your own are your worst colors and should be avoided. For example, if you're a light summer, meaning you look best in colors with a cool temperature and an extremely light value, that means you're worst colors are from the dark autumn palette, aka colors with a warm temperature and an extremely dark value.

Another thing I want to mention is that the concept of personal color does not mean that you are only restricted to colors in your color palette or that all colors outside of your palette look horrible on you. You are also able to borrow colors from the palette of the same type as your own. For example, if you are a soft autumn. you can borrow colors from the soft summer palette. If you are a bright winter, you can borrow colors from the bright spring palette. Ultimately, the main purpose of personal color analysis theory is to have a set of colors that you can always rely on to look flattering on you and to know which colors you should avoid at all costs, and I as a makeup artist use this theory to determine what eye, cheek, and lip colors look the best on myself and my clients.
